This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
